Yield of Guava Farming
Before
harvesting the guavas, we should know when the guavas should be harvested.
Guava
is usually ready to pick once it changes color. Red guava will turn from green
to yellow. White guava turns from deep green to light green. You can also smell
your fruits.
Timing
is key because if you pick guava early, it won’t taste good, and avoid
over-ripening of fruits as it deteriorates quality and taste.
These
fruits cannot be maintained on the tree longer in ripen stage. So, fruit
picking should be done, as sooner as they attain maturity.
There
are several ways to harvest fruits. Here we are going with manual hand picking
of fruits at an interval of few days.
Fruit
plucking machine is also available in the market to harvest fruits.
When
conditions are right, a single tree can produce from 20 kg to 30 kgs of fruit
per year.
Guava
trees may even produce twice a year; and with proper pruning, you can even get
a guava to produce year round.
Guava
should be placed on a counter or in a paper bag to ripen further after picking.
A
ripe guava can be stored in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. Mature, green guava
can be stored for 2-4 weeks in a cool moist area;
After
harvesting, carry out cleaning, grading and packing operations. As guava is
perishable fruits, it should be marketed immediately after harvest.
Guavas
can in packed in Wooden crates or bamboo baskets and can be sent to the market.
